Where to Stay in New York City

Pick the kind of trip first. The area follows from that, and the hotel follows from the area. Doing it the other way round is why hotel searches take so long.

Start from the trip, not the map

Most advice about where to stay in New York answers a question nobody asked: which neighborhood is best. There is no answer to that, because the neighborhoods are not competing for the same visitor. The useful question is narrower: what does this particular trip need to be near, and what is it willing to give up to get there.

Across 341 of the 369 properties in our New York City selection, the August 2026 snapshot ran from $54 to $974 a night, with a median of $229. Treat those as reference points rather than rates you can book today. 28 had no usable price in the snapshot and are compared on location and review record alone.

Five common trips

First time in New York

You want to be able to walk out of the door into the city rather than plan a commute into it. Midtown and the blocks around it do that job, and they are also where the largest share of our selection sits.

Here for one venue or event

When a single address decides the week, distance stops being trivia. Start from the landmark page rather than the area page, because it is built from coordinates instead of an area label.

Travelling with family

Two things usually decide it: space and whether the room setup works for more than two people. Apartment-style properties solve both more often than a standard hotel room does.

Watching the budget

Below the city median, the trade is almost always location for price. That is a reasonable trade in New York, where the subway does most of the work anyway.

Been before, want something different

The obvious central options stop being interesting on a second or third visit. Independent properties and the outer boroughs are where our selection gets more distinctive.

Boutique hotels · Brooklyn

The one rule that holds

Distance to a landmark matters less than most people expect, and the review record matters more. A hotel ten minutes further from the venue costs you twenty minutes a day. A hotel with a weak record costs you every night you are in it.

That is why every landmark page here has a section on why the closest hotel is often not the one to book.

FAQ

Common questions

Is it worth staying outside Manhattan?

It depends on what the trip is anchored to. Our Brooklyn and Queens shortlists price below the Manhattan median, and for a trip built around one or two districts that is often the better trade. For a first visit with a long sightseeing list, the extra travel usually costs more than the saving is worth.

How many hotels should I actually compare?

Three or four. Beyond that the differences stop being decisive and the choice gets harder rather than better. Every shortlist on this site opens with three picks for that reason.
