What Hotels Actually Cost in New York City

Our own selection of 369 New York City properties, read as a price picture rather than as a shopping list. Snapshot taken August 2026.

The short answer

Across 341 of the 369 properties in our New York City selection, the August 2026 snapshot ran from $54 to $974 a night, with a median of $229. Treat those as reference points rather than rates you can book today. 28 had no usable price in the snapshot and are compared on location and review record alone.

By price band the snapshot puts 34 under $150, 216 between $150 and $300 and 91 at $300 or more a night. That means roughly 9 percent of the priced selection sat under $150 a night at that moment.

Two things distort every published figure about New York hotel prices, including ours. The first is that a nightly rate is not a single number: the same room moves by a factor of two or three between a quiet Tuesday in February and a Saturday in December. The second is that averages get pulled up by a small number of very expensive properties. The median is the more useful figure, which is why it is the one used throughout this page.

A parse failure worth knowing about

The source file returned a nightly price under $60 for 21 of the most expensive hotels in Manhattan, including several of the best known names in the city. The delivered price band column had inherited that error and labelled every one of them as a budget property.

Every figure on this site excludes those rows rather than repeating them. It is the reason our budget shortlist holds 34 properties rather than the 55 the source column would have produced.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a normal price for a New York hotel?

In our August 2026 snapshot the median across 341 priced properties was $229 a night, with the middle of the range running roughly $160 to $344.

Are these prices what I will pay?

No. They are a snapshot taken on one date and they do not account for your dates, the day of the week, the season or how far ahead you book. Use them to compare areas and properties against each other.

Which area is cheapest?

Of the areas we publish, The Bronx had the lowest median at $169, against $574 in Upper East Side. That is a factor of about 3.4.
